“Hannibal” will return to NBC. Just not as quickly as we would have hoped.
During NBC’s presentation at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt made the announcement that “Hannibal” Season 3 is getting pushed back to a summer release date.
“It’s a show we love,” said Greenblatt. “We love it. We also love summer.” The move will place “Hannibal” as one of three drama projects airing this summer on NBC. The other two are “Aquarius” and “Heroes: Reborn.”
“Hannibal” is an adaptation of Thomas Harris’ Hannibal Lecter novels that has become highly acclaimed despite its abysmal ratings. One of the reasons that “Hannibal” has survived this long is that the series is owned and produced by Gaumont International. Gaumont has already sold “Hannibal” internationally, and NBC pays a relatively small fee to keep it on the network.

While speaking to Hitfix, Greenblatt added that “Summer doesn’t affect the future of the [‘Hannibal’] seasons. Deal-wise, it’s a great business deal for us, even at a low rating, which is why it’s been for as long as it has been.”
With a summer debut, “Hannibal” supporters are said to be hopeful that a lower ratings threshold will allow the series to continue to survive at NBC.
