It’s a mystery that has confounded the Australian sports world for 14 years but now the missing bodysuit Cathy Freeman famously wore when she lit the 2000 Sydney Olympic flame may have just turned up in Melbourne.
As reported by Fairfax, an item of clothing which appears to be the famous white suit, was handed in to Melbourne East police station by a representative of the Melbourne Cricket Club on Monday. It’s not known how the club representative came into possession of the suit.
“Police are attempting to confirm the authenticity of the item and are liaising with the NSW police,” Inspector Ian Geddes said. The suit has been sent away for forensic testing to confirm its authenticity.
Australians will remember the iconic white body suit as the one worn by Cathy Freeman as she stood beneath a waterfall when a mechanical fault delayed the lighting of the Sydney Olympic cauldron in 2000 during the opening ceremony.
“She removed the suit after the ceremony and it has not been seen since,” said Australian Olympic Committee media director Mike Tancred.
“What happened to the suit has been the subject of much debate over the years as it is a major part of Australia’s Olympic history. We are hoping the item of clothing handed to the MCC Museum is authentic and the mystery is finally solved.”
