The long running Australian TV staple of decades past, “Hey Hey It’s Saturday”, is being resurrected, with former host Daryl Somers announcing the variety show will reappear on a new online platform, called HeyHey.tv.
Somers made the announcement on “A Current Affair“ last night, and according to the Herald Sun within moments of the news dropping the new website had already crashed and fans were already venting their frustration at being unable to log on.
“Online, it’s a whole new ball game,” said Somers on the program, describing the decision to move “Hey Hey” online as “a new era of the show”. The online platform will mostly host archived clips from the show’s previous 27 years, but Somers said new live shows will be considered “if people embrace the website”.
That would include looking at bringing some of the cast back, including Red Symons, Dickie Knee, Livinia Nixon and Plucka Duck. “Undoubtedly one of the most popular segments was Red Faces,” Somers said. He also said the website will do some “current stuff” as well for fans.
“Hey Hey It’s Saturday” debuted on the Nine Network in 1971 and ran for 27 years, broadcasting its last episode on November 20th, 1999. In 2009 the show attempted a TV comeback but faltered with audiences thanks in part to an ill-conceived sketch involving black-face wearing performers.
