Syfy Charts a Course For ‘Krypton’

You can blame “Gotham” for this one.

Fox’s Batman prequel has been one of the few breakout hits on network TV this fall. So Syfy is throwing the gauntlet down with a Superman prequel series… two generations before the Man of Steel comes to Earth.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Man of Steel screenwriter David S. Goyer is developing “Krypton” as a one hour drama at Syfy. Goyer and Ian Goldberg (“Once Upon a Time”) came up with the premise of “Krypton” and it’s pilot story, but Goldberg will be writing the actual script by himself.

As for the premise, Syfy describes it this way: “Years before the Superman legend we know, the House of El was shamed and ostracized. This series follows The Man of Steel’s grandfather as he brings hope and equality to Krypton, turning a planet in disarray into one worthy of giving birth to the greatest Superhero ever known.”

Keep in mind, this is on top of the already announced “Supergirl” TV series on CBS and “Teen Titans” pilot in development on TNT.

As envisioned in the film Man of Steel, Krypton had a mixture of high technology and fantasy trappings before its destruction led Superman’s father to send him to Earth. It’s not clear if “Krypton” will tie into Man of Steel’s continuity or stand on its own.
