It’s tough to imagine that Pokémon hasn’t reached its critical mass already, but at least in the UK, it appears as though the franchise is still growing.
So far, the combined sales of Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire in the UK have eclipsed last year’s Pokémon X and Y by 17 percent at the same stage, according to Chart-Track. This is particularly notable because while X and Y were entirely new games, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are remakes of Game Boy Advance titles released in 2003. Not only have the Generaion III remakes eclipsed X and Y, but they’ve also outdone Black and White, the previous UK record holder. Black and White were also original titles.
Similarly impressive is that Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire outdid Nintendo’s other incredibly hot 3DS release, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS. While that game placed 13th on the UK charts, the Pokémon pair landed at 6th and 7th respectively. Call of Duty and FIFA still rounded out the top two spots, as was expected.

Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire have received positive reviews thus far, with a composite 83 score on Metacritic as of this writing. Nintendo theorized the titles would experience positive sales with its Same-Generation Hypothesis back at its investor Q&A, and it appears as though the company’s predictions have come true.
Will the same-generation theory continue to move units with future remakes? There’s no telling just yet, but it seems likely. In the meantime, you can grab Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire on the New 3DS, original 3DS, or super-cheap 2DS, so take your pick.
