Marvel Narrows Down Jessica Jones & Luke Cage Casting Contenders

Marvel’s “Daredevil” series is heading to Netflix in 2015, but the casting for the follow up series, “Jessica Jones” is beginning to heat up.

According to Deadline, four actresses have been invited to test for the lead role in “Jessica Jones.” “Breaking Bad” and “Don’t Trust The B—” star Krysten Ritter, Alexandra Daddario (“True Detective”), Jessica De Gouw (NBC’s “Dracula”) and Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies).

More intriguingly, the report notes that Luke Cage is also being cast for the “Jessica Jones” series, where he will appear in multiple episodes before spinning off into his own show on Netflix. Lance Gross (“Crisis”) and Mike Colter (“The Following”) were named as the leading contenders to play Cage.

Based on the character created in the comic book Alias by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos, “Jessica Jones” revolves around a former superheroine who reinvents herself as a private detective before once again being drawn into the underbelly of superhuman activities. In Alias, Jones and Cage began dating each other and they eventually married within the pages of New Avengers.

Marvel and Netflix have not set a date for “Jessica Jones” to premiere, but it will likely follow “Daredevil” later in 2015 or early in 2016. “Luke Cage” will be the third series before “Iron Fist” takes the spotlight in his own show. All four characters will then be brought together for an eight hour miniseries called “The Defenders.”
