The Parramatta Eels have signed former Manly forward Anthony Watmough to a four-year contract.
The Test and Origin player joined the Eels after being released from the final year of his deal with Sea Eagles earlier this week, reportedly bitter over the club’s decision to let veteran Glenn Stewart walk after a combined 463 matches together.
“Leaving Manly is the toughest thing I’ve done in my professional life,” the two-time Sea Eagle premiership player posted via Instagram on Thursday.
“I want to thank all those who have helped me along the way. There are many supporters that I have met on my journey thus far who I now call friends. I would like to thank them for their loyal support of me and my family Elle, Claudia & Jake.
“I can’t wait for the challenge that lies ahead and look forward to taking up my 4 year contract with the Eels.”
The signing comes just days ahead of Parramatta’s training camp in Seattle.
“Anthony is a world-class, premiership-winning player who will further bolster our forward pack for the next few seasons,” Parramatta coach Brad Arthur said.
“He’s played almost 300 NRL games, and along with that experience he’ll bring outstanding leadership qualities that will help grow our young talent.”
The Eels also announced the signings of 25-year-old Titans utility Brad Takairangi, Canberra flyer Reece Robinson, Manly forward Richie Fa’aoso and 28-year-old former Knight Danny Wicks after an 18-month prison sentence for drug offences.
“This might only be my second chance, but I know it’s my last, and I’m keen to make something of it,” Wicks said.
Fa’aoso was forced into an early retirement in late 2013 after suffering a serious neck injury, but has since been given the all clear to resume his career.
