Wii U Can Connect to Two GameCube Adapters at Once for 8-Player Super Smash Bros.

We learned yesterday that the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will support five, six, seven, and eight-player brawls for the first time, but how exactly does one prepare for such a massive undertaking? Though most players will probably patch together an array of assorted Wiimotes, Nunchuks, Classic Controllers, and GameCube pads, those who do have access to eight whole GCN remote are in luck. The Wii U can, via all four of its USB ports and two adapters, attach eight GameCube controllers. It certainly doesn’t sound like the most travel-friendly solution.

The confirmation comes via a tweet from YouTuber ProJared, who all but spells it out with a picture demonstrating the functionality. I must admit, this is an impressive feat for the Wii U; not only must the console haul the burden of rendering eight-player Smash Bros. battles with minimal lag in 1080p, but it also has to power two USB peripherals, each with four additional peripherals growing out of it. If these eight-way fights really are as frenetically fun as Nintendo promises, then the Smash Bros. dev team (and Wii U’s engineers) deserve a pat on the back. Oh, and Wii U can mirror the screen’s image to the GamePad while doing all of that too.

Nintendo had a field day with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U announcements yesterday, so be sure to get up to speed here if you haven’t had a chance to watch the company’s latest video. With Mewtwo DLC and more on the way in 2015, it’s safe to say this is a great time to be a Smash fan.
