VIFF In Full Swing

The 33rd Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF), one of the largest film festivals in North America, is currently underway, wrapping up on October 10th.

The event features more than 350 films from 70 countries over the course of 16 days. The opening gala took place on September 25th. Some of the films getting buzz this year include:

“Winter Sleep,” the winner of the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Wild” by Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée (“Dallas Buyers Club”) and starring Reese Witherspoon.

“Whiplash,” Damien Chazelle’s riveting film about an ambitious jazz drummer (Miles Teller) pushed beyond his breaking point by an instructor (J.K. Simmons) who takes tough-love to extremes.

“The Vancouver Asahi,” which sees its world premiere. Director Yuya Ishii and actors Satoshi Tsumabuki as well as Kazuya Kamenashi are attending VIFF.

“October Gale,” written and directed by Ruba Nadda and starring Patricia Clarkson, Scott Speedman and Tim Roth. The film tells the story of a doctor who takes in a mysterious man that washes ashore at her remote cottage with a gunshot wound.

“The VIFF is pleased to announce the Canadian Images Gala screening, ‘October Gale,’ will be presented in partnership with Telefilm Canada. For many years, the Vancouver International Film Festival has enjoyed the distinct pleasure of showcasing the largest selection of Canadian films in the world. As partners we demonstrate our collective commitment to ensuring the celebration of Canadian cinema is at the forefront of local, national and international audiences alike. We look forward to working together in the coming years to building this signature event to be the Canadian “scene-to-be-seen” during the festival,” said VIFF Executive Director Jacqueline Dupuis in a press release.

The 29th VIFF Industry Conference runs October 1-3, while the Totally Indie Day is October 4th.
