I’m all for companies finding creative ways to support their blockbuster games, and Ubisoft is the latest example of exactly that. The company has officially launched something it’s calling “Project Widow,” an online tour of Paris in support of Assassin’s Creed Unity. It’s modern Paris, as opposed to the French Revolution Paris found in the game, but the concept is interesting nonetheless.
Ubisoft brought in Andy Serkis to handle narration, and no, he isn’t speaking like Smeagol throughout the presentation (unfortunately). Project Widow allows users to explore various areas of Paris from a street-level perspective, with locales including Notre Dame, The Bastille, and even Place de la Concorde. If Paris itself doesn’t interest you, there are other treats to be had as well — mainly in the form of assets for Assassin’s Creed Unity.

As you experience the tour, you’ll find unseen art from Unity scattered throughout the city, as well as historical info about the French Revolution that pertains to the game. Given that Unity features characters entirely new to the series, it should be interesting to see how protagonist Arno’s endeavors eventually cross paths with the trajectory of the revolution itself. As far as where the name “Widow” comes from, apparently it’s what folks used to call the guillotine. Quite depressing when you think about it.
Assassin’s Creed Unity is scheduled to release on November 11th for PS4, PC, and Xbox One, so spent some time with Project Widow before then if you’re curious about the game’s historical tie-ins. There’s a also a season pass that was recently announced, which is now available for pre-order. Given the relative sparsity of the upcoming holiday season, you’ll probably want to check it out.
