Next month, The CW will unveil “The Flash,” a spinoff of its most popular show, “Arrow.” The new DC Comics inspired series was set up last year in a two part episode of “Arrow” that introduced Grant Gustin as Barry Allen. Together, both “The Flash” and “Arrow” are expected to be among The CW’s flagship series this fall.
But what if that was only the beginning?
While speaking with AdWeek (hat tip to Comic Book Resources), The CW President Mark Pedowitz said “What you’ll see embedded in Flash and Arrow is that we’ll have the ability to test characters out. Is there room to grow them into the next show? I cannot tell you yet. There are discussions going on.”
DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. have been increasingly aggressive the last two development seasons. Last spring, that resulted in “The Flash,” “Constantine,” “Gotham” and “iZombie” landing series orders. In the last month alone, Warner Bros. has optioned “Titans” at TNT and sold “Supergirl” to series at CBS.
So, what’s left for The CW? Quite a lot, actually. DC has a deep bench of superheroes, equal to or arguably greater than Marvel’s lineup. The question is which superhero would work best as another spinoff of “The Flash?”
The CW has tried and failed to find a take on a young Wonder Woman series that it liked, while potential series about Raven and The Graysons fizzled out before even landing pilots. But there is one character that would be a natural fit for the shared universe of “Arrow” and “The Flash.”
Green Lantern.
You may have noticed that Green Lantern hasn’t been mentioned during the numerous casting rumors for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice or the Justice League movie. The Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern movie just didn’t connect with audiences and that character is on the backburner. That makes him the perfect target for a TV project.
Hal Jordan aka Green Lantern is also one of the closest friends of The Flash and Green Arrow in the original DC Comics. Hal’s Green Lantern ring may be more sci-fi than anything currently seen in either “Arrow” or “The Flash,” but that shouldn’t rule out seeing Green Lantern on TV.
Of course, this is simply conjecture. Until something new pops at The CW, we won’t know which DC characters they are currently talking about.
In the meantime, share your picks for which DC superheroes should be the next to get their own spinoff from “Arrow!”
