TIFF 2014: Director James Marsh on The Theory… by CraveOnline
You never forget your first interview with an Oscar winner. For CraveOnline’s Brian Formo that was director James Marsh at the Toronto International Film Festival of 2014. Marsh won best documentary for Man on Wire (which Crave was clearly a fan of, placing it in the top 5 oscar winning documentaries of all time) which detailed the methods used by Philippe Petit to cross the Twin Towers of New York City on a high wire. Petit’s story is actually getting the biopic treatment (with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and director Robert Zemeckis) which will be released in 2015. And Marsh, a director that chooses to jump between documentaries and narrative films, is jumping into the biopic business as well, with a portrait of the relationship between Stephen Hawking (Eddie Redmayne) the brilliant physicist with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and his wife Jane (Felicity Jones). We emphasize “portrait” because The Theory of Everything is gorgeous. Marsh really made some lovely cinematic aesthetic choices.
