Fox Picks Up ‘Minority Report’ TV Sequel

Last month, Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Television revealed its plans to produce a new “Minority Report” TV series. Less than a month later, the project has found a network.

According to Deadline, Fox has given “Minority Report” a $1 million put pilot commitment to keep the project from being shopped to other networks. Godzilla screenwriter Max Borenstein is writing the pilot script for “Minority Report.”

“Minority Report” was originally a short story by Philip K. Dick before Spielberg adapted it as a feature film in 2002 with Tom Cruise as John Anderton, the head of Washington, D.C.’s Precrime police division. At the end of the film, Anderton proved that Precrime wasn’t infallible because suspects accused of future crimes didn’t always go through with them in every possible future.

The “Minority Report” TV series will take place ten years after the film, as one of the three surviving Precogs struggles to adjust to life while dealing with visions of the future. He will be teamed up with a female detective who helps him find a renewed use for his powers. Borenstein will serve as an executive producer on “Minority Report” alongside Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey.

It should be noted that Fox recently canceled the futuristic cop drama, “Almost Human” after a single season. It’s a little surprising to see the network revisit a similar premise so quickly, but the brand recognition of “Minority Report” and Spielbergs’ reputation may have helped overcome that.

There’s currently no start date for the “Minority Report” pilot, but the project will presumably be in contention for the Fall 2015 TV season.
