New York Yankees outfielder Ichiro Suzuki decided one day, that in order to better connect with his Spanish-speaking MLB counterparts, he’d learn some of their language. But not just to trade niceties, but rather to trade verbal blows.
Trash talk is something that occurs in just about every sport known to man, in one way or another, and Major League Baseball is no exception. Infielders frequently talk smack to baserunners and vice versa. While much of it can be rather heated while in the moment, it’s all in good fun and likely quite harmless.
The Japanese Yankee outfielder said that there really aren’t any curse words in his language, so he thought he’d learn basic Spanish (including all the obligatory curse words) so that he could “bond” with Spanish-speaking players and put a smile on their faces, offering up competitive language in a friendly way. He feels it brings him closer to them, because they likely notice his good-hearted attempts to intermingle with them in this multi-cultural melting pot country that MLB is a part of.
