Dallas Cowboys Will Sign Michael Sam

Pending a physical, Michael Sam will be a Dallas Cowboy by the end of the week.

“I’m excited to be to be joining Dallas, I just want to play football, it’s great to be heading back to my home state,” Sam told the Dallas Morning News on Tuesday night after his arrival in Dallas. “… It’s been a roller coaster this past week but I’m happy where I’m at now. … I’m just looking forward to being a Cowboy, my focus is on making the team.”

Sam was a seventh round pick of the Rams in this past May’s NFL Draft, however he was unable to make the team out of training camp when he was cut this past Saturday. The Cowboys are now hopping on the opportunity to bring on the former SEC Defensive Player of the Year.

The NFL’s first openly gay player had 2.5 sacks this preseason and had six tackles in last Thursday’s game against the Dolphins. The Cowboys have serious concerns about their defense going into the season, which includes their pass rush. By adding Sam, the Cowboys have nothing to lose.

It’s feasible Sam will be an integral part of the practice squad for Dallas and could make a start mid-way through the season if he impresses. Unfortunately, many call Sam a ‘tweener,’ meaning he’s in between the two sizes needed for the positions he could play in the NFL; although he had a solid college career, he is too small to be a starting defensive end, yet too slow to be a linebacker, which is why the Rams decided not to hold on to the prospect.
