Bounty hunter Samus Aran isn’t exactly known for her sexy attire. She prefers clothing of the “deadly metal spacesuit” variety. When you consider the flexibility and speed needed to partake in Super Smash Bros., though, you have to wonder how exactly she got by in that scratchy blue jumpsuit in the first place. Well, as usual, Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai has an answer for you.
Samus will sport some new duds in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Wii U, and according to Sakurai, he never thought the development team would have time to squeeze them in. The sporty look is based on Samus’s appearance from Metroid Fusion and Metroid: Zero Mission, so it’s not as if the look is completely fabricated — Samus would, under the right circumstances, actually wear this. Sakurai explains.
Looking at the number of days we have left for development, it would be an impossible task to create this… That’s what I told my staff. But thanks to the determination of her female designer, these Zero Suit outfits got completed in time. From the ending of Metroid: Zero Mission, here’s Samus in shorts! You can use the same outfit variations in both the 3DS and Wii U versions.

Nintendo has been busy preparing Smash Bros. for its fast-approaching launch, announcing a slew of new characters from the Fire Emblem series and confirming the return of fan favorite Captain Falcon just last month.
You might expect that equipping Samus with a revealing outfit would raise eyebrows from some fans, but as Sakurai noted in his Miiverse post, it was Samus’s female designer that created the bounty hunter’s new attire. Clearly, Samus just wants to be comfortable!
