Ahead of the “Star Wars Rebels” launch this fall, Disney and Lucasfilm have been conducting a publicity campaign to introduce the new characters that will populate the new series.
Towards that goal, Disney and Lucasfilm have created four “Star Wars Rebels” shorts that will debut this month. These shorts were created as stand alone stories with original material, as opposed to simply using clips from the upcoming episodes.
The first short is called “The Machine in the Ghost” and it features the captain of the Ghost, Hera (Vanessa Marshall) and her partner, Kanan (Freddie Prinze Jr.), one of the few Jedis who survived Order 66. But the main focus of the short falls on Chopper aka C1-10P, an astromech droid who seems to be extremely exasperated with the conflicting orders from his two owners.
You may notice that the “The Ghost in the Machine” channels the spirit of the very first Star Wars film, especially with the interactions between Hera and Kanan as well as the old school Tie-fighter action.

The next “Star Wars Rebels” short is expected to debut next Monday, August 18. “The Machine in the Ghost” appears to take place before Kanan, Hera and Chopper were joined by Sabine Wren (Tiya Sircar) and Zeb Orrelios (Steve Blum). The first episode of the series will bring the crew of the Ghost into contact with Ezra Bridger (Taylor Gray), a skilled thief who has his own agenda.
Disney Channel will broadcast the one hour series premiere of “Star Wars Rebels” in October before the regular series moves to Disney XD.
