Actor and comedian Robin Williams has been found dead in his California home at the age of 63.
The cause of death is currently believed to be “suicide via asphyxiation”, according to the coroner’s office in Tiburon, California but a full investigation is currently underway.
“Robin Williams passed away this morning,” Williams’ publicist Mara Buxbaum told The Hollywood Reporter. “He has been battling severe depression of late. This is a tragic and sudden loss. The family respectfully asks for their privacy as they grieve during this very difficult time.”
According to the statement from police, they arrived at Williams’ California residence at 12.00 pm on Monday, August 11th after receiving a 9-1-1 call reporting a male adult had been located unconscious. He was pronounced deceased at 12.02pm.
“This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” Williams’ wife, Susan Schneider told THR.
“On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”
A four-time Oscar nominee, Williams’ work traversed comedic and dramatic roles, including his breakout role on the ABC sitcom “Mork & Mindy” in 1978, playing Mrs. Doubtfire in 1993 and his turn as Dr. Sean Maguire in Good Will Hunting, for which he won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 1997.
According to Variety, Williams had recently entered 12-step rehab stint for drug abuse. A full forensic examination into his death is currently scheduled for August 12th with subsequent toxicology testing to be conducted.
He is survived by his wife and three children.
