‘Game of Thrones’ & ‘Fargo’ Lead The 2014 Emmy Nominations

When HBO announced that it was placing “True Detective” as a drama instead of a miniseries in this year’s Emmy Awards, it created some additional drama of its own. Now, the predicted battle between “Breaking Bad” and “True Detective” has been set in the Outstanding Drama category alongside “Game of Thrones,” “Mad Men,” “House of Cards” and “Downton Abbey.”

In the lead actor in a drama category, “True Detective” co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrleson will be up against each other and Bryan Cranston from “Breaking Bad,” Kevin Spacey from “House of Cards,” Jon Hamm from “Mad Men” and Jeff Daniels from “The Newsroom.” For lead actresses in a drama, Lizzy Caplan is a newcomer to the category for her role in “Masters of Sex,” with Julianna Margulies (“The Good Wife”), Claire Danes (“Homeland”), Robin Wright (“House of Cards”), Kerry Washington (“Scandal”) and Michelle Dockery (“Downton Abbey”) also nominated for the award.

For comedy, “Louie” returned after a one year hiatus to take on “Modern Family,” “Orange Is The New Black,” “Veep,” “The Big Bang Theory” and “Silicon Valley.” While Showtime’s “Shameless” was shut out of the main comedy competition in its first year in the category, William H. Macy was nominated for lead actor in a comedy alongside Louis C.K. (“Louie”), Jim Parsons (“The Big Bang Theory”), Don Cheadle (“House of Lies”), Rickey Gervais (“Derek”) and Matt LeBlanc (“Episodes”). For lead actresses in a comedy, returning winner Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) will face Lena Dunham (“Girls”), Melissa McCarthy (“Mike & Molly”), Piper Chapman (“Orange Is The New Black”), Amy Poehler (“Parks and Recreation”) and Edie Falco (“Nurse Jackie”).

“Game Thrones” led all TV series with 19 nominations, including supporting actor and actress nods for Peter Dinklage and Lena Headey in addition to a guest actress nomination for Diana Rigg. “Fargo” came in second with 18 nominations, including a battle between Martin Freeman and Billy Bob Thornton in the lead actor in a miniseries category, which will also pit Freeman against his “Sherlock” co-star, Benedict Cumberbatch. Freeman is also nominated for “Sherlock” the supporting actor in a miniseries category.

For its final year in competition, “Breaking Bad” tied “The Normal Heart” with 16 nominations, but “American Horror Story: Coven” edged out both of them with 17 nominations. “Saturday Night Live” had 14 nominations and “House of Cards” had 13 while “True Detective,” “Orange Is The New Black,” “Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey,” “Sherlock” and “Downton Abbey” each had a dozen nominations.

The 65th Annual Emmy Awards will air on Sunday, August 25 on NBC. The full list of major Emmy Award nominations is below.
