It finally happened. Guillermo del Toro will direct Pacific Rim 2, which will be released on April 7, 2014. But that’s nearly three whole years from now, and plenty of time for Guillermo del Toro to sneak in one more low-budget mystery project.
“Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting [Pacific Rim 2],“ Guillermo del Toro told Collider. “We start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017.”
Guillermo del Toro refused to go into detail about the mystery movie, other than to say he hopes to cast his former Hellboy co-star John Hurt and an as-yet-unnamed actress who starred in a short film, and that – like most Guillermo del Toro movies – “There’s one great creature in it.”

Guillermo del Toro has spent most of his career dividing his time between ambitious Hollywood projects like Mimic, Hellboy and Pacific Rim with smaller, more acclaimed movies like The Devil’s Backbone and the Oscar-nominated Pan’s Labyrinth. This would, however, be the first time the horror director has made a black and white movie, an aesthetic that seems right up this classy monster enthusiast’s alley.
