The new trailer for David Fincher’s Gone Girl opens with Sela Ward, the murder victim from the classic thriller The Fugitive, asking the man who replaced Harrison Ford in the Jack Ryan franchise whether or not he killed his wife. But since this is a David Fincher joint, there isn’t a hint of irony. We can’t be the only ones who find it distracting… can we?
The new Gone Girl trailer offers a more detailed look at a more serious portrayal of a man (wrongfully?) accused of murdering his wife, dealing with the shifting nature of public opinion and the damning description of his behavior in his wife’s personal diary. Ben Affleck stars alongside Rosamund Pike, a creepy Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry, who looks like he may have got lost on the way to an Alex Cross sequel.
But we like what we see here. Gone Girl may turn out to be another standard potboiler mystery like Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, but unlike The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo it doesn’t look like the Social Network director is trying to ramp his filmmaking up to 11 to disguise it as something more.
Watch the trailer, let us know what you think. Gone Girl opens on October 3, 2014.
