As part of the State Government’s plan to halve the number of metropolitan councils, an affluent Western Australian area could soon see the creation of a hybrid suburb which shares the name of the cartoon Rocky Mountain suburb South Park.
As reported in Perth Now, the City of South Perth and Town of Victoria Park are proposed to merge and councillors in South Perth this week voted for the new entity to be called “City of South Park”.
Some of the other discussed names included South Bank, Yaragan, Curtin and Twin Rivers. While the name South Bank was favoured by the Town of Victoria Park, is Mayor Trevor Vaughan did concede that “If it weren’t for that funny cartoon it would actually be a pretty good name.”
“If it were called South Park, then I would be using the name to activate the city. You could use it with signage and make it a place to visit – play on it,” he added. South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty agreed. “I’m sure it will put a smile on the faces of some residents when they read the word South Park,” she said. “Let’s face it, we’re going to get a lot of Google hits aren’t we?”
The merger is expected to go through, despite the fact that South Perth council is launching legal action against the amalgamation plan. A final recommendation on the name will made by the Local Government Advisory Board to Local Government Minister Tony Simpson.
