Can the corpse of any beloved film go unmolested these days?
Just a day after news that Iron Man 3 director Shane Black is reanimating the remains of Predator for a new reboot, now we have word of another 80s classic having its wits, charm and appeal resurrected because Hollywood is too lazy to come up with any new ideas.
Originally reported by Deadline and re-reported by Crave movie site /Film, director Dean Israelite and screenwriter Arash Amel are in the process of being hired by MGM to take on the remake of the 1983 Matthew Broderick action-thriller WarGames.
The John Badlam-directed picture was ahead of its time 31 years ago, showcasing Matthew Broderick as a teen hacker who cracks into NORAD computers and unwittingly puts the planet on the brink of nuclear war.
So why not just re-do it? Maybe we can even show how cool we are by casting Broderick in the mentor role of Dr. Stephen Falken, played in the original by John Wood? Oh, Hollywood…so clever.
Israelite just made is directorial debut with the Michael Bay-produced Project Almanac, scheduled for a January 2015 release.
As for MGM, they’re proving to be one of the more creatively bankrupt entities in Tinseltown after recently backing remakes of RoboCop, Carrie, and Red Dawn with reboots of Poltergeist and The Town That Dreaded Sundown still on the way.
Since you love remaking 80s classics, MGM, might we suggest a little film about a talking duck trapped in a world he never made. Just check with Marvel if it’s okay first…
