The effort was there, but class ultimately proved the difference as the Socceroos went down 3-0 to defending World Cup champion Spain in their final Group B match on Wednesday morning.
With both teams win-less and point-less heading into the clash, hopes were high that Australia would build on their promising outings against the Netherlands and Chile and earn something against the football powerhouse. But it wasn’t to be – despite a promising start that saw Australia press a lethargic Spain in the opening 20 minutes.
Sticking to an up-tempo game plan, the Socceroos had the better of the early chances but without the suspended Tim Cahill, they lacked the necessary class to find the net. Spain gradually worked its way into the match, with David Villa terrorising Australia’s defence on the right edge.
The soon-to-be Melbourne City striker gave A-League fans a preview of what to expect as he continually found space on the flanks. It was hardly surprising then that it was Villa who opened scoring for Spain after he was inexplicably left unmarked in the penalty area.
The 32-year-old classily turned in a cross in the 36th minute after fine lead-up work from midfield maestro Andres Iniesta. Trailing 1-0 at the break, the Socceroos pushed hard for an equalizer but fell further behind when Chelsea forward Fernando Torres slotted home in the 69th minute.
Australia coach Ange Postecoglou rung the changes in search of a miracle and brought on Mark Bresciano for a final World Cup hurrah. But the veteran couldn’t spark anything as Spain scored their third and final goal through substitute Juan Mata in the 82nd minute.
In the morning’s other Group B match, the Netherlands kept their unbeaten streak going with a 2-0 victory over Chile.
