Yoenis Cespedes made major headlines two years ago after defecting from Cuba to play professional ball in MLB. He made headlines last season after demolishing long balls during the All-Star break to win the Home Run Derby. Now, this season, he’s making headlines again for one of the most epic throws you will ever see.
The play happened Tuesday night against the Angels in Anaheim when in the bottom of the eight inning, the score tied 1-1 with one out and Howie Kendrick at first base, Mike Trout crushed a Luke Gregerson pitch to the left field corner. Cespedes was able to reach the ball on one hop, however he misplayed it, allowing the ball to tip the edge of his glove and into the wall. However, it was that error that allowed magic to ensue.
The 28-year-old outfielder recovered well, fielding the ball off the wall before heaving a perfect strike to catcher Derek Norris at home plate to tag out Kendrick — a fast infielder who should have scored easily.
The toss was estimated to have been 325 feet from home.
Of course Bo Jackson’s defense (and offense…and everything) was legendary. Cespedes’ throw from Tuesday night definitely makes us reminisce of one of these famous plays.
