Sonic the Hedgehog Movie Announced by Sony

Hollywood must have seen all the big video game news coming out of this week’s Electronics Entertainment Expo (E3) and wanted in on the action. Sony has just announced that they are working on a feature film adaptation of Sonic the Hedgehog, the world famous Sega mascot and the star of a never-ending series of platformers that most gamers agree haven’t been great in over a decade. Sonic’s arch-nemesis Dr. Eggman (aka Dr. Robotnik) will be featured in addition to some of the franchise’s other “favorite characters,” according to Hollywood Reporter

Producer Neal Moritz, famous for the Fast and the Furious franchise, will working with writers Evan Susser and Van Robichaux of The Uptight Citizens Brigade to bring Sonic the Hedgehog to life. Marza Animation Planet – the studio which contributed the opening cinematics for Sonic Free RidersSonic Colors and Sonic Generations – will be handling the animation duties for a film that will be a hybrid of live-action and CGI animation, according to Marza CEO Masaneo Maeda.

No word yet on whether the upcoming feature film will adapt a specific storyline from one of Sonic the Hedgehog’s many animated series, video games or comic books, but we do hope the writers will pretend the Steve Urkel series never existed.
