Geelong coach Chris Scott says there hasn’t been any panic within the playing group and coaching staff in the aftermath of last week’s 110-point loss to the Sydney Swans.
The Cats go into tomorrow night’s match against Carlton at Etihad Stadium still smarting after suffering their worst defeat in nearly 25 years against the Swans. While it’s not panic stations at Geelong, Scott said the club had taken ownership of the embarrassing result to make sure it didn’t happen again.
“The ultimate response we will see on Friday night and for every game thereafter, but the initial response at training and in our reviews has been really positive,” he said. “We’re all accountable at this footy club. Everyone involved in that game made some serious mistakes and did some things we need to rectify. ”
Despite their heavy loss last Thursday, the Cats remain well-positioned in sixth on the AFL ladder with a 7-3 record. Scott said one defeat wouldn’t cause his players to suffer a crisis of confidence. “We’re a little bit behind the ladder leaders but in that group that’s competing for a top-four position,” he said. We’re still confident in what we can achieve and we certainly haven’t fallen so far behind the eight ball that we can’t get to where we want to be.”
Boosting the Cats for the Carlton showdown is the likely return of senior defenders Tom Lonergan (concussion) and Corey Enright (ankle) from injury.
