They call us “the human race” but it’s not much of a game, is it? Nobody’s very clear on the rules and even so, cheating abounds. Maybe that’s why movies that pit humans against each other in fights to the death hit so close to home: if nothing else, it’s pretty clear what we’re supposed to do for a change.
Paul Hough’s new sci-fi thriller The Human Race is the latest in the long, celebrated line of genre thrillers that takes people from all walks of life and forces them to fight for their lives. The plot goes thusly: “Eighty strangers from all walks of life are ripped out of their daily lives and forced to participate in a brutal race to the death. The rules are simple; follow the arrows or you will die, step on the grass and you will die, get lapped twice and you will die. Only one participant will survive. Race or die. There can only be one winner, but who will survive and for what purpose?”
