Fantasy Baseball: Helmuth’s Half Dozen – Week 8

Happy Memorial Day!

It’s officially summer. Time to eat five pounds of BBQ before sucking in your gut at the pool all while keeping a close eye on your fantasy team.

It’s the time of year when players get hot as the temperatures rise and lousy fantasy managers refuse to update their rosters while taking vacations to Hawaii. Priorities, people.

Here is your fantasy help this week from yours truly, just taking a glance at who’s available on the wire in many deep leagues.

Go kick butt, eat some ribs and down a cerveza, and don’t forget to thank a veteran.

Pickups of the Week

Your 6 best options off the waiver wire.

Josh Beckett SP – Los Angeles Dodgers (51% owned)

Either way, I’m picking him up, riding his hot streak until it lasts, and hopefully selling as high as possible. Still, there is no way he should only be owned in half of leagues.

Ryan Vogelsong SP – San Francisco (22% owned)

Speaking of selling high, Vogelsong should be the poster child. He was an All-Star in 2011, but he’s been awful the past year and a half and he’s now 36-years-old. However, he’s thrown blanks two games in a row now: 13.2 IP, 2 W, 0 earned, lowering his ERA to 3.20.

I always like National League hurlers. I would bite on Vogelsong in deep leagues just to see if he stays hot. If he keeps it up, which isn’t totally out of the question considering his FIP is at 3.79, I would sell around the All-Star break.

Marcell Ozuna OF – Miami (33% owned)

Ozuna ranked No. 13 overall on the player rater last week; he has 9 HRs and more than 30 RBI, putting him on pace for a .260/35/90 season — those are All-Star numbers folks.

Has Ozuna ever blown us away? No. But here’s a fun-filled fact that might make you want to pick him up and give him a ride — he’s only 23-years-old.

Lonnie Chisenhall 3B – Cleveland (28% owned)

Has the former top prospect finally figured it out? He has an eight game hit-streak, hit 2 HRs last week and is batting .381 on the year. I think it’s time to add him and find out.

Zach Britton RP – Baltimore (44% owned)

This top prospect came up last year as a starter but is now the favorite to lead the bullpen in saves after locking in his third of the year against the Brewers Monday.

Garrett Jones 1B/OF – Miami (46% owned)

Hitter of the Week:

Nelson Cruz OF – Baltimore: .455/4/7, 9 runs, 3 doubles

Hurler of the Week:

Adam Wainwright SP – St. Louis: 2 W, 17 IP, 21 K, 0.00 ERA, 0.41 WHIP
