So, March was nuts, right? Titanfall, inFamous: Second Son, South Park: Stick of Truth, Dark Souls II, Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and a few more marquee titles fell in our laps over the course of roughly 30 days.
Now that that’s over with, we’re starting to hit a minor lull in game releases. Now’s the time, my friends, to head back to the games from the middle of last generation that you might have missed.
You know why? They’re dirt stinkin’ cheap.
Whenever a new console launch rolls around, I always hope that the machines are backwards compatible. Some people think I’m crazy for wanting that added cost in the device, but I’d rather have one platform that spans 15-ish years of games than spread them over two.
When the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 launched without backwards compatibility, a little bit of my dear shelf and closet space died. I was keeping my old consoles.
Now that I’ve held on to them, I find myself surfing retailers for aging games I missed on the stupid cheap. Now that this year’s first big lull is here, I’m diving back in time.
I missed Darksiders II. Good thing I can get it used for $5. How about you? BioShock sells for $3, the complete version of Grand Theft Auto IV moves for $6, Halo Wars (which I’ll contend was really solid) is going for around $5, Ni no Kuni is $11 and oddballs like Catherine are dropping for $9.99.
My point?
The Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii all had spectacular life spans. For gaming consoles, the argument could be made that these machines had some of the best libraries in this medium’s history. While perhaps not the stuff of classics like, say, EarthBound, the big games on these old devices defined a generation.
Look, if you know someone with an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 who never played Red Dead Redemption, they can rectify they’re horrific wrong to the tune of like $8 right now.
The Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and even Wii U are offering some really great contemporary thrills. But, now that we’re in a slow month for games, I suggest you drop $20 and walk away with three or four amazing games from a few years back.
