For as long as there has been a Batman, there’s been a Commissioner James Gordon.
75 years ago in Detective Comics # 27, James Gordon made his first appearance in the same issue that introduced the world to Batman. As conceived by Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Gordon was one of Batman’s most prominent allies on the police force.
Gordon’s role within the Batman mythos is so great that there is rarely an incarnation of Batman without him. During Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, Gordon was notably played by Gary Oldman.
Ben McKenzie will step into the role of a young Detective James Gordon in “Gotham,” the upcoming Batman prequel TV series on Fox. McKenzie has the distinction of being one the of the only actors to play both Gordon and Batman/Bruce Wayne, as he did in the animated film, Batman Year One. McKenzie previously starred in the Fox series, “The O.C.” and the critically acclaimed cop drama, “Southland.”
Fox has released the first official photo of McKenzie as Gordon. And while he lacks Gordon’s trademark mustache, it seems like he’ll be a good fit for the role.
This continues Fox’s run of preview photos from “Gotham.” We’ve also been shown Donal Logue as Harvey Bullock, Camren Bicondova as Selina Kyle, Sean Pertwee as Alfred Pennyworth and Robin Lord Taylor as Oswald Cobblepot. The next photo to be released will probably be David Mazouz as Bruce Wayne.
“Gotham” has been ordered straight-to-series, so it will likely debut this fall on Fox.
