In a summer season generally drenched in sequels, here's a breath of fresh air for ya — an original sci-fi fantasy concept.
Say what you will about some of their less successful movies, but filmmakers Andy and Lana Wachowski can always be counted on to lend a gorgeous visual style to any of their projects — which appears to be the case in this latest trailer for the action extravaganza Jupiter Ascending.
In this trailer posted around the interwebs, including Crave movie site Coming Soon, we get a taste of what looks to be another trademark Wachowski production: big-screen eye candy with a whole lotta interesting ideas thrown in for good measure.
Mila Kunis stars as Jupiter Jones, a Russian immigrant who seems destined for greatness, but who's currently plying her trade scrubbing other people's toilets. That all changes when she's confronted by Caine (Channing Tatum), a genetically-enhanced assassin sent by no less than the Queen of the Universe to stamp out poor Jupiter. The encounter awakens Jones, who begins assembling a plan to depose the Queen once and for all and restore order to the cosmos.
From this trailer, Jupiter Ascending doesn't seem to have some of the headier aspirations of the Wachowskis' last film Cloud Atlas, but it sure looks like it could be a nice summer palate cleanser from the steady diet of superhero epics and franchises we'll see paraded before our eyes over the next few months.
Jupiter Ascending opens July 18.
