In two months, NBC will formally announce its schedule for next fall. But the network has pulled the trigger on an early renewal for four of its shows.
NBC has officially renewed “Grimm” for its fourth season, “Parks and Recreation” for its seventh season and “Chicago Fire” for its third season. “Chicago P.D.” — the recent spinoff of “Chicago Fire” — became only the second NBC freshman drama to earn a renewal after “The Blacklist.” “The Voice” and “Celebrity Apprentice” were also previously renewed for next season.
However, there are still several shows on NBC that may not be back. Even “Law & Order: Special Victim Units” is no longer an automatic renewal, as its ratings have declined and Mariska Hargitay hasn’t yet signed a new deal that would keep her on the show for its potential 16th season.
Other shows on NBC’s bubble include “Dracula,” “Revolution,” “Parenthood,” “About a Boy” and “Community.” Although “Community” managed to squeak out a renewal last season as part of an overall deal with Sony Pictures TV that included “The Blacklist;” which is NBC’s biggest scripted hit. That may help ‘Community” pull off a sixth season renewal.
It’s too soon to call the fates of “Believe,” Crisis,” “Undateable” and “The Night Shift.” NBC’s “Hannibal” has shown some improvement on Friday nights, but it’s chances may be improved by the fact that “Hannibal” is produced by Gaumont International Television, which has already sold the series around the world. “Hannibal” is supposedly less expensive for NBC than a traditional drama because Gaumont is picking up most of the tab.
