Marvel’s Netflix Original Series Will Film In New York

Next year, Marvel will make its biggest push into live action programming to date with “Daredevil,” the first of four Netflix original series including “Luke Cage,” “Iron Fist” and “Jessica Jones” before culminating in an 8 hour team up miniseries, “The Defenders.”

All four of those characters have strong ties to New York from their earliest appearances in Marvel Comics. Earlier today, Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney (Marvel’s parent company) and New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo jointly announced a deal that will ensure that “Daredevil,” “Luke Cage,” “Iron Fist” and “Jessica Jones” will be filmed in New York.

Of course, this didn’t come cheaply. The terms of the deal weren’t announced, but it’s rumored that New York state offered Marvel Studios sizable tax breaks and incentives to the tune of about $4 million.

“The Governor’s policies make this great state a more affordable and attractive location,” said Iger. “Our Marvel series for Netflix will inject millions directly into the local economy and create hundreds of new jobs.”

Marvel Entertainment President Alan Fine added “Setting our production in New York City truly underscores the authenticity and excitement we plan to bring to The Defenders and their ‘flawed heroes of Hell’s Kitchen’ stories.”

Both “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones” have landed showrunners Drew Goddard and Melissa Rosenberg, respectively. No casting announcements have yet been made, but they are expected to come soon.
