It’s no secret that the PS4 has been thriving in the US, and now it’s official–the system’s success is continuing in Japan.
Though not racking up absurd numbers (they closely resemble what the Wii U managed in Japan over a similar time period), the PS4’s totals of 322,083 consoles sold is a vast improvement over its predecessor. Back in 2006, the PS3 sold just 88,443 in the same window, while the PS2 is still top of the heap at 630,552.
The numbers have been grabbed and translated from Japansese publication Famitsu by Siliconera, and while they’re likely accurate, they aren’t official stats from Sony. Whether the real numbers will bode better or worse remains to be seen, but as long as Famitsu‘s report is ballpark, PS4 should have nothing to worry about.
Though PS2’s astronomical success will likely never be re-created, it isn’t stopping Sony from living large. The company celebrated PS4’s Japanese launch with a party featuring Hideo Kojima as a guest speaker, pep-talks from Sony executives, and of course, plenty of free stuff.
In other news, the Xbox One has yet to launch in Japan, but don’t worry guys, it’s already 2014’s product of the year. Don’t even get me started.
