Exclusive Interview: Alicia Silverstone on Angels in Stardust

CraveOnline: You did an infamous superhero movie before superhero movies were the norm. Did you have any sense on the set of Batman & Robin that it wasn’t going to go over well?

Alicia Silverstone: Hmm, I don’t think so. I don’t think I was paying attention to that kind of thing.

If it had been now, you would’ve had your choice of any superhero.

Ohhh, well, thanks!

Was The Crush a fun movie to do as your first film?

Oh my God, that was just heaven. That I can remember like it was yesterday in some ways. I was so turned on and inspired, feeling so independent and alive. I was 15 years old and I went to Vancouver all by myself to make this movie, lived by myself in an apartment. It was so neat to walk around and feel like life was beginning and endless. Just the role was so good and I felt like I got to do really good work in it. It was a movie that I wanted to do so much so I was so grateful to get the role.

She actually just made CraveOnline’s list of the hottest movie stalkers, so congratulations.

Oh, thanks. I’m honored.

When was the last time you saw the Aerosmith videos and what did you think when you saw them?

I can’t remember the last time I saw them but I always enjoy watching them. They’re really funny and they were a special time. What do you think of them?

I can’t remember the last time I saw any music video.

I know, right?

But I certainly remember those two and it was such a unique story of a music video being a breakthrough. Was it kind of a silent film acting?

Yeah, Marty Callner saw me in The Crush and that’s why he hired me to be in the Aerosmith videos. So he was really taken with my acting and was smart. He wanted to make a mini movie. He had done mini movies on his Aerosmith videos before but I feel like he was one of the first guys to do that, to really make stories. Videos before were so kind of, the girl was always the sort of sex figure and just sort of romped around. He made these movies where, I mean they were still very sexy, don’t get me wrong, but the first one, “Cryin’” was really a story of a tough girl actually who was being sort of wronged and getting her own back at the guy. It was a really nice little story and they were very well done. Marty’s quite brilliant I think.

So he saw The Crush just when it was playing in theaters?

Yeah, he saw The Crush. He actually saw The Crush and then made the entire band go watch The Crush with him in a movie theater.

Is Gods Behaving Badly coming out?

I don’t know what’s happening with that.

Okay, so I asked you about my favorite Alicia Silverstone movies. Are there any other favorites of yours?

We definitely talked about The Crush and Clueless. I loved getting to work with Kenneth Branagh on Love’s Labour’s Lost.

Yes, and a musical!

I know, and I was so proud to just get to work with him. He’s so brilliant. My theater experiences have been so amazing, working with David Mamet and Donald Margulies and Laura Linney and Daniel Sullivan. It’s just been incredible.
