When Disney purchased Lucasfilm, it was widely expected that “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” would migrate from Cartoon Network to one of Disney’s cable channels. Instead, Lucasfilm announced last year that “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” was essentially finished at the end of its fifth season, with only a few “bonus content” episodes remaining in the series.
Today, Netflix and Disney have announced that “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” is coming to Netflix on March 7 for its sixth and final season; which will consist of 13 episodes. The deal includes the streaming rights for every season of “The Clone Wars,” including the theatrically released Star Wars animated movie that kicked off the series in 2008.
Via Deadline, some of the upcoming episodes of “The Clone Wars” are said to revolve around “An intrepid clone trooper discovers a shocking secret,” in addition to “Anakin Skywalker’s closest relationship is tested to its limits, and what Master Yoda discovers while investigating the disappearance of a Jedi could forever change the balance of power in the galaxy.”
This isn’t the first major deal between Disney and Netflix. In 2013, Disney signed a pact with Netflix for exclusive streaming rights to its newest movies, (bypassing premium cable channels) and Marvel Studios (a subsidiary of Disney) unveiled an ambitious plan to create four original superhero series on Netflix to be followed by a team up miniseries beginning in 2015.
Recently, Disney announced that the next animated Star Wars series, “Star Wars: Rebels” will premiere as a special on The Disney Channel in Fall 2014 before moving to Disney XD.
