CraveOnline: There’s a spin-off, Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones, coming out next month.
Jason Blum: Well, that one… So if you include that, we’ve made four, and The Marked Ones I think is terrific. I think that’s a home run.
How much of a sequel is that? Are you going to delve more into the mythology of the series?
It’s a spin-off but there is a certain amount of mythology from the Paranormal franchise, yes.
The Paranormal Activity sequels, particularly the last two, they really build on each other. While you could watch them individually, if you watch all of them in a row it really helps. For Paranormal Activity 5, I guess, is The Marked Ones going to be required viewing?
I think if you’ve seen the first four there are a few kind of Easter Eggs in there that you might appreciate more, but absolutely don’t need to have seen any Paranormals to enjoy the fifth one.
The last time we talked I said that I was waiting for a Blumhouse TV series.
It’s coming!
Is it?
Yes.
Has it been announced? Have I missed this?
There’s something which I’m very proud of which I’ve been working on in a while, and we’re going to start shooting in about two months. Sadly, I can’t tell you what it is. Next time we talk we’ll be shooting it. And there’s another series that we shot a pilot. Catherine Hardwicke did a pilot for us. It’s called “Eye Candy” that Victorica Justice starred in, which also, depending on if they pick it up or not, they haven’t weighed in, could become our series. They haven’t weighed in yet on whether or not they’re going to pick it up but the pilot is finished and I’m really proud of it. So between that and the one that we’re shooting – we’re going to shoot multiple episodes – we’re going to have something on the air very soon.
That sounds awesome. Now I know you can’t tell me too much about it, but let me ask you this: if you’re a fan of the Blumhouse movies, is the series going to be for you, or is it a new entity entirely?
Yeah. Yeah, both I think “Eye Candy” and the new one that we’re going to do fit into the parameters of Blumhouse.
Is there any chance now that you’re in TV for a spin-off of the movies? Could Specs, Tucker and Elise get their own show where they get into new adventures every week?
I’d like to do that. I don’t think you can do that while we’re still making movies. Now Leigh is writing the third Insidious, so we have to see how far we can take the series of movies […] but I believe very strongly that once that kind of comes to a close you can do a series, and I think soon we’ll be in a place where you can have a series at the same time. Although right now people are too nervous to have that.
Well, one thing Marvel is doing is TV series that are like maxi-series, like ten episodes for Netflix. There could just be Insidious 3.5 as a mini-series.
Yeah, I would be so into that. I think that would be super cool.
