Next year, “Sons of Anarchy” is expected to finish its run on FX after seven seasons. Series creator Kurt Sutter has previously mentioned a potential “Sons of Anarchy” prequel series several times. However, Sutter’s next TV project is moving far away from SAMCRO and the town of Charming.
Deadline is reporting that FX has ordered a pilot for “The Bastard Executioner,” a period drama that takes place in the fourteenth century during the reign of King Edward III of England. Conceived by Imagine TV’s Brian Grazer and developed by Sutter, “The Bastard Executioner” is follows one of King Edward’s warrior knights “who is broken by the ravages of war and vows to lay down his sword. But when that violence finds him again he is forced to pick up the bloodiest sword of all.”
In a brief statement with the announcement, Sutter said “I love the network. I love the world. I love the blood.” Sutter has spent virtually his entire career at FX, first on “The Shield” before eventually creating and executive producing “Sons of Anarchy.”
The report notes that Sutter’s “Sons of Anarchy” prequel series and the comedy show starring Sutter’s wife, Katey Sagal are still alive at FX, but both projects are being pushed back while Sutter works on “The Bastard Executioner.”
Additionally, Sutter is not expected to begin production of ‘The Bastard Executioner” until after he finishes the final season of “Sons of Anarchy;” which may mean that “The Bastard Executioner” won’t get started until late in 2014.
