The majority of us without speech impediments would crumble at the thought of giving a speech in front of a room full of our peers, but Musharaf “Mushy” Asghar confronted his fears by thanking his teachers and fellow students in a heartwarming speech, despite suffering from an often debilitating stammer.
The video, taken from Channel 4’s documentary series Educating Yorkshire, shows Musharaf discussing the positive impact his time spent at the school has had upon to a hall filled with teary-eyed friends and mentors.
The clip, which sees Musharaf’s teacher Mr Burton helping him overcome his stammer in preparation of delivering the speech, has gone viral, receiving over 5 million views. Speaking to The Mirror, Musharaf has revealed that Mr Burton has inspired him to follow in his footsteps, saying: “I want to be a teacher now. After seeing how Mr Burton has helped me it would be good if I could help someone who has the same problem as me – or anything else.
“Quite a few kids with stammers have been in touch with me to see if I can give them a call. It is a really good feeling to think I might be helping others.”
