Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, a new third-person action game set in the fictional world created by J.R.R. Tolkien, has been announced today
Shadow of Mordor will take place in Middle-earth, the setting of Tolkien’s popular books The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which were later adapted into award-winning films by director Peter Jackson. According to the press release, the game will see players assume the role of “Talion, a valiant ranger whose family is slain in front of him the night Sauron and his army return to Mordor, moments before his own life is taken.” However, Talion is resurrected by a Spirit of vengeance and given the abilities of the Wraith, the hooded figures who pursue Frodo Baggins in TLOTR. The press release also suggests that Talion will face off against Sauron during his quest for vengeance.
Shadow of Mordor will also feature a “Nemesis System”, which will see players creating their own archenemies in the game’s dynamic world as a result of the actions they make. These enemies will continue to grow if you cannot defeat them, becoming stronger over time and making for more formidable foes. The game promises a “unique experience to every player.”
Developers Monolith Productions have worked alongside Peter Jackson and the artists alongside Weta Workshop for the art design, and are also collaborating with Middle-earth enterprises. It is set to be published by Warner Bros. Interactive, and is coming to the PC, Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360 and PS3.
