The 80’s gave us some brilliant pop-culture films — and Ghostbusters stands as one of the all-time best.
Starring alongside Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson in the 1984 classic was the Ecto-1, aka The Ectomobile. Based off a 1959 Cadillac ambulance, Ecto was an integral part in the franchise that spawned two feature films, “The Real Ghostbusters” animated series, comic books and a whole slew of videogames that are still going strong 30 years later.
Of course, you’re more likely to see a ghost than one of these still cruisin’ on the road these days. There are only a few dozen Ecto replicas in the entire world — and only eight in America.
Lucky for us, we found two glorious examples. Host Athena Stamos talked with owners Sean Bishop and Bryan Fear about the incredible highs and wallet-emptying lows of owning such a complex vintage vehicle — and we also got a glimpse at rare production illustrations of alternate concepts for the car.
