On Thursday, BBC America abruptly canceled “Copper” after two seasons, effectively making this Sunday’s episode into the series finale.
BBC America’s General Manager, Perry Simon tried to play off the cancelation as if “Copper” had reached “a fitting moment to conclude this American story.” But the “Copper” creative team: Tom Fontana. Barry Levinson and Tom Kelly already had plans for a third season; which means that the second season finale was not the ending that they wanted for Kevin Corcoran’s story.
Deadline is reporting that Fontana, Levinson and Kelly are considering using Corky’s further adventures on the big screen in a “Copper” movie. Fontana is said to be reworking the storylines originally intended for the third season of “Copper” into a suitable film. The Copper movie would continue to explore the time period immediately following Abraham Lincoln’s assassination as the nation entered the Reconstruction period.
Of course, there’s no guarantee that “Copper” will get a feature film follow up. Showtime’s “The Borgias” and ABC Family’s “The Nine Lives of Chloe King” were both in line for movies that would wrap up their respective storylines, but neither show received the much hoped for resurrection. Instead, the creators of their respective series released the movie scripts as E-books.
