Neil Cross Confirms ‘Luther’ Prequel Movie

Next week, BBC America will broadcast the North American premiere of “Luther” Season 3, starring Idris Elba as the title character, John Luther. By all accounts, the third season of “Luther” will also be the final season, but that doesn’t mean that Luther will be gone for good.

At the Edinburgh TV Festival (via Deadline), “Luther” creator Neil Cross not only confirmed his plans to make a Luther prequel movie, he also said that he has finished the screenplay and it may film as soon as next year. Cross added that “Idris is a brilliant leading man, and we’ve hoped to turn Luther into a movie for a long time.”

According to various reports, the Luther film will bring back Indira Varma as Zoe, Luther’s doomed wife from the first season in addition to Warren Brown as Detective Sergeant Justin Ripley and Steve Mackintosh as Detective Chief Inspector Ian Reed. Because Alice Morgan did not meet Luther until the first season, Ruth Wilson will not be in the prequel movie. However,  there is talk of an Alice Morgan spinoff series.

One of the reasons that “Luther’ will not continue on television is that Elba has become an in-demand movie actor, with upcoming roles in Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom Beasts of No Nation and Thor: The Dark World. Elba also co-starred in Pacific Rim earlier this year.

Cross has also created a pirate drama called “Crossbones” that will premiere on NBC in 2014. Recently, Cross revealed that he has been invited to write for the eighth season of “Doctor Who.”

“Luther’ Season 3 will debut on BBC America on September 3.
