Marine Steven Rhodes is Eligible to Play College Football

Earlier this month, the NCAA ruled 24-year old Marine Steven Rhodes, who walked on to Middle Tennessee State University after serving 5 years with the Corps, was ineligible to play college football because he played some games in a military-only recreation league.

The NCAA said those games constituted “organized competition” and Rhodes would have to sit out his first year of college. (Meanwhile, players convicted of DUI, assault and statutory rape get to suit up.)

Monday, the NCAA reversed its decision. Their decision, printed by Crave’s NESN, reads, in part:

“As a part of the ongoing review of NCAA rules, our members will examine the organized competition rules, especially as it impacts those returning from military service. We thank Steven for his service to our country and wish him the best as he begins college.”

The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders, with Rhodes, open their season against Western Carolina August 29.
