Earlier this month, BBC revealed that Peter Capaldi will be the Twelfth Doctor on “Doctor Who” as the rebooted series enters its eighth season next year. But there will be at least one veteran “Doctor Who” writer besides Steven Moffat on hand to chronicle the first adventures of the new Doctor.
While speaking with Stuff.co.nz, Neil Cross said “I am going back. I have got story ideas tucked away, but if I told you about them I would have to kill you. There’s a whole bunch of stuff I want to do. Steven [Moffat] is clearly very busy with the 50th anniversary special and Christmas special, but I have to find out from Steven what his intentions for the Doctor are and what sort of stories he wants me to write.”
Cross is best known for creating the BBC series “Luther” starring Idris Elba and the upcoming NBC pirate series, “Crossbones.” Cross also wrote two episodes for Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor during the seventh season of “Doctor Who” in addition to his previous writing stints on “Spooks” and “The Fixer.”
“I am really excited about writing for Peter Capaldi, and equally sad not to have the opportunity to write for Matt Smith again,” noted Cross. “I think Matt Smith has been the most outstanding Doctor to date.”
“I am familiar with Peter Capaldi’s work and I am looking forward to it,” added Cross. “Peter has presence on the screen. I think he’s an outstanding choice. There’s something about his physicality, his image, his wit, that evokes the Doctor. There’s something about him that evokes classic ‘Doctor Who.’”
“Doctor Who” Season 8 is expected to begin production later this year for a 2014 premiere.
