Back in 2012, Syfy was reportedly close to greenlighting “The Almighty Johnsons,” a remake of the original New Zealand TV series created by James Griffin and Rachel Lang. But instead of going forward with a new take on the concept, Syfy is simply bringing the original series to America.
Earlier today, Syfy announced that it has acquired the rights to broadcast the first two seasons of “The Almighty Johnsons” in the United States. The first season will premiere on Syfy in 2014.
“The Almighty Johnsons” follows Axl Johnson (Emmett Skilton), who discovers on his 21st birthday that he and his family are reincarnated versions of the Norse Gods. Axl is Odin, while his brothers Mike (Tim Balme), Anders (Dean O’Gorman) and Ty (Jared Turner) are Ullr, Bragi and Höðr, respectively.
In a statement, Syfy’s Senior Vice President of Programming, Chris Regina said “We’re delighted to introduce quality New Zealand programming to the Syfy audience. A compelling blend of fantasy and comedy, this quirky series should resonate strongly with our viewers.”
The good news for fans of the original incarnation of “The Almighty Johnsons” is that this could improve the series’ chances of getting a fourth season, especially if Syfy decides to co-produce the show and kick in money for production. Of course, that scenario would be contingent upon “The Almighty Johnsons” being a hit in this country.
The third season of “The Almighty Johnsons” is currently airing in New Zealand.
