Comic-Con 2013: 5 Things We Learned About TV

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con International was one of the biggest shows to date, and the CraveOnline team was there with to cover all of the latest news and panel reports from the worlds of comics, film, television and beyond.

On the TV front, there were five stories that stood out from the rest and really grabbed our attention. To see them unfold in person was an amazing experience.

One of the most thrilling moments at Comic-Con came when Joss Whedon and Jeph Loeb unveiled the entire pilot episode of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” on Friday. During the pilot, Cobie Smulders briefly reprised her role as S.H.I.E.LD. Special Agent Maria Hill from The Avengers. This was one of the best kept secrets in Hollywood, accomplished in part because ABC didn’t allow the pilot to be screened before Comic-Con.

Subsequent reports have indicated that Smulders may be on additional episodes of “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” if her schedule on the final season of “How I Met Your Mother” doesn’t get in the way. If “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” gets a second season, perhaps Smulders can appear more frequently.

For “Arrow” fans, this was a surprise because we assumed that Black Canary was already on the show. If “Arrow” follows DC’s lead, then Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) should eventually be Oliver Queen’s (Stephen Amell) crime-fighting romantic partner with a fondness for fishnets.

Instead, Caity Lotz is joining the cast as Black Canary in “Arrow” Season 2. This doesn’t mean that Laurel won’t eventually take over the role herself, but this is a significant departure from the source material.

Despite being someone who supposedly hates cartoon crossovers, “The Simpsons” creator Matt Groening has two dream crossovers coming in the next year. On the first day of Comic-Con, we learned that the entire “Simpsons” voice cast will appear as their iconic characters in an episode of “Family Guy.”

Two days later, it was announced that “Futurama” will also get a crossover with “The Simpsons,” as the “Futurama” cast brings their characters to Groening’s flagship series for a season finale. If “Futurama” were to pull off another resurrection, wouldn’t an appearance on “The Simpsons” be a great way to reintroduce the series on Fox?

There were some rumors that the 12th Doctor would be introduced during the massive “Doctor Who” panel on Sunday. Shortly beforehand, “Doctor Who” showrunner Steven Moffat told us that the 12th Doctor hasn’t been cast during our exclusive interview with him.

In that same interview, we also spoke to Matt Smith and Jenna-Louise about their future “Doctor Who” plans. You can also check out our coverage of the “Doctor Who” panel.

One of the few weaknesses of “The Walking Dead” is the way that the show has treated characters like Lori and Andrea, both of whom became despised and hated by the fans. And both women were killed off during the third season.

During “The Walking Dead” panel on Friday, series creator Robert Kirkman conceded that a romance between Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira) was possible. That’s definitely not a confirmation. However, fans in the audience began loudly calling for a “Richonne” pairing on the show. And it makes sense. The audience loves both of those characters and it would be a pairing that never occurred in the comics.
