Back in 2007, Syfy premiered the miniseries “Tin Man,” a modern day reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s OZ novels starring Zooey Deschanel and Neal McDonough. “Tin Man” debuted to impressive numbers and less than impressive reviews.
According to Deadline, Syfy is diving into the world of OZ again with director Timur Bekmambetov. The newly reimagined miniseries is called “Warriors of OZ,” and it follows “a warrior from present day Earth is transported to a post-apocalyptic future Oz where he must team up with three other warriors, Heartless, Brainless, and Coward, in order to defeat the evil Wizard who has enslaved the land.”
Bekmambetov.is best known for directing Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and the Russian vampire thrillers, Night Watch and Day Watch.
The idea for “Warriors of OZ” originated with Bekmambetov and he is set to executive produce and possibly direct the project. A screenwriter for “Warriors of OZ” has not yet been found, but the project will be produced by Universal Cable Productions.
Earlier this year, Syfy announced that it was also developing Larry Niven’s Ringworld and Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End as potential miniseries. Potentially adding “Warriors of OZ” to the mix would allow Syfy to debut an event miniseries several times during 2014 or beyond.
