Comic-Con 2013 Exclusive: Marc Webb Teases Another Amazing Spider-Man 2 Villain

Is the obscure Spider-Man villain coming to the hit franchise…?

Amazing Spider-Man 2 came to San Diego Comic-Con 2013 and CraveOnline was there, getting interviews with director Marc Webb and producers Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad. Those full interviews are coming soon, but Marc Webb teased something never-before-mentioned to us, and we just had to share it with you now. Is The Gentleman coming to Amazing Spider-Man 2, or Amazing Spider-Man 3?

“What about The Gentleman?” Marc Webb said from out of the blue, while we were joking about the possibility of Philip Seymour Hoffman playing The Looter.

“That’s getting kind of obscure,” I replied, thinking he was just spitballing. “I always liked The Spot…”

He stopped me. “Think about the Gentleman,” he said. “I’m just saying. Put that in your… There’s your little tidbit. Think about The Gentleman.”

“How serious are you being?” I asked.

Webb nodded dramatically. “You’re just nodding dramatically,” I continued.

“I’m just saying,” Webb concluded, “think about The Gentleman.”

The Gentleman was a Spider-Man villain originating in the novel Spider-Man: The Gathering of the Sinister Six. In the story, the incredibly wealthy manipulator –involved in the mysterious death of Peter Parker’s parents – formed the Sinister Six, the supervillain group that is widely rumored to appear in Amazing Spider-Man 3.

With the mystery of Spider-Man’s parents at the fore of Marc Webb’s new movie franchise, it seems possible that The Gentleman, in some form or another, could be used in Webb’s film, if only as a plot device. Perhaps Webb needed a rich manipulator to tell his story, and simply selected one from Spider-Man canon. Or maybe he’s a big deal.

Heck, maybe he was the mysterious figure in Curt Connor’s cell at the end of Amazing Spider-Man 1, although that’s just speculation…

Either way, we Webb’s suddenly serious tone and insistence that “That’s your tidbit” implies that this tease is more than just, well, teasing.

Look out for CraveOnline’s full interviews with Marc Webb and the producers of Amazing Spider-Man 2 very soon!
